Canon: D.Gray-Man
Character: Kanda Yuu
Timeline: Right after Noah Wisely kidnaps Kanda in Jordan.

Personality: When you first meet Kanda you might be first struck with how beautiful he is. He's been called beautiful and pretty by different people through out the series, however upon doing so you'll soon realize that the pretty face hides a foul mouth and a bad personality. Kanda is crass, blunt, arrogant, and cold. He's very stubborn when it comes to his view of the world and he can't stand people who don't keep their promises. Kanda is also notoriously cynical and a lot of it has to do with the early months of his life.

Kanda is a Second Exorcist meaning he wasn't born in a conventional matter. Rather he was born from a pit full of liquid in the Sixth Laboratory of the Asia Branch of the Black Order. He was angry and cold towards others from the start, specifically his fellow Second Exorcist Alma Karma. He eventually befriended Alma though it wasn't under conventional circumstances. The two fought and sliced each other up until they'd died several times over. Nothing like dying to forge a friendship after all.

Sadly when Kanda is later forced to kill Alma in order to save his own life and continue living, the cynicism and coldness in Kanda's personality become even more prevalent. It's hard to say if Kanda considers anyone his friend, though his actions would suggest he doesn't.

Kanda doesn't allow others to get close to him. It isn't until much later in the series that anyone finds out the origins of Kanda's birth, previously only a select few knew, as he doesn't talk about himself. Kanda keeps to himself and prefers in that way. He's built up a wall around his heart and it keeps him from being hurt. After Alma, Kanda understands friendship as something fleeting, and in the lives they lead friends can be taken away at any given instant, so it's safer to keep them at arms length.

This doesn't mean that Kanda doesn't fight for his comrades though he has a strange way of showing what affection he does have. While in Noah's Ark he offers to stay behind to fight Skin Boric in order to give the others a chance to get away. Of course they refuse not wanting to leave Kanda behind, but Kanda, understanding that someone has to make it out alive, attacks his friends in order to make them mad enough to agree to his ways and leave him behind to do as he wants.

Coincidentally Kanda's fighting style can be rather reckless. His healing abilities make it almost impossible for him to die. Kanda has been seen to put himself in compromising positions in order to gain the upper hand of a battle. This is seen once in the anime in a filler episode when he's fighting the Millennium Swordsman, Victorio, and again when he's fighting Skin Boric.

Despite his recklessness, Kanda does have a strong will to live. It's that very will that gave him the strength to kill his best friend, and it keeps Kanda going until he can meet Alma again. There's a bit of a contradiction here as Kanda believes Alma to be dead, though he states he's still searching for 'that person' which can only mean Alma.

Kanda hates akuma. Because Kanda was artificially created from the brain of a deceased exorcist and a new body, Kanda's very existence is based on that of the akuma and the need to be rid of them. He accepts his innocence as a method for getting rid of the akuma though initially he hated it as well. As a direct result of this hatred he also hates anyone who has anything to do with the akuma including one cursed boy aka Allen Walker.

Kanda doesn't hate Allen just for being cursed though it is a large portion of his hatred. He also dislikes him immensely because their views are the complete opposite of one another's. Kanda sees Allen as someone who fights without a purpose, and who couldn't possibly keep the promises he makes as they're too extraordinary to be feasibly done; this is mostly because of Kanda's own cynicism.

Though Kanda is a part of the Black Order, he could care less what the Order themselves do. When he finds out about the Third Exorcist project, Kanda doesn't exhibit anger towards it and states it doesn't matter to him what the Order does though later it seems this is a front more than anything. He also declines to inform Kamui about Allen's turning into a Noah. Kanda, like many of the exorcist in the Order, has no other choice but to exist within the Order, so for Kanda it too has become the means to an end.

Another major point of Kanda's personality is that he is very aggressive and lives on a constantly short fuse. He reacts quickly in anger and isn't in touch with any of his other emotions besides anger. He constantly bickers with Allen at a given opportunity, he speaks harshly to Lavi and often threatens to slice him up, and it seems the only one he marginally tolerates is Lenalee. Kanda also has the mouth of a sailor. He learned to swear when he was just born in the Asia branch and while it doesn't happen often the swearing is bleeped out by nature itself the words can be so foul.

There are very few people that could be considered close to Kanda, and certainly he wouldn't call them as such, but his direct teammates Froi Tiedoll, Daisya Berry, and Marie Noise are all people who could be considered close to Kanda. Tiedoll's the one who took Kanda in and mentored him after his time in the Asia Branch. He's also the one who gave Kanda his surname, previously he was only known by Yuu. Despite Kanda's irritations with Tiedoll, he does display an air of respect for his mentor. It is however part of Kanda's nature to help his friends though he will complain the entire time. A good indication that Kanda does respect and care for Tiedoll is that he uses the name given to him by the older man. While Kanda could have made his own name or continued to go by Yuu he instead chooses to use the name Kanda.

Noise Marie is second to Alma in Kanda's heart. He first met Marie when he was attempting to escape from the Asia Branch, and Marie helped him. It's also Kanda's blood that helped heal Marie. As a result the two are about as close as Kanda's willing to let anyone get. He's shown real concern for Marie when he was incidentally hit by an akumas bullet and faced dying. Marie is also the only one of the group who is really able to get Kanda to calm down when he is pissed.

Daisya Berry, like Tiedoll, can get more easily on Kanda's nerves, however as a team mate and yet another person he's allowed to get closer to him he's not as harsh with Daisya as with others. When Daisya was killed it did affect Kanda though he didn't show it on the surface. However it is the fact that Kanda didn't say anything about Daisya's death that serves as proof he did care for his team mate. Previously Kanda has been known to comment harshly on the deaths of others particularly Finders for the Order as he doesn't believe they have the same worth as the Exorcists.

Outside of his team, there's only one person he allows close to him and that's Lenalee Lee. They've known each other nearly their entire lives, and Kanda has surprisingly been there for her when she needed someone the most, namely when she was scared of Malcolm Leverier being in the branch. She would go to Kanda when he would be meditating and ask nothing more than to sit with him. A noteworthy scene is years later when the two are older and Kanda calls Lenalee out on her fear. He doesn't however ask her to leave, only tells her to stay quiet so that he can continue meditating in peace. If he really didn't like Lenalee he would have yelled at her to leave much the same as he does with Allen and Lavi when they annoy him.

Though Kanda does openly hate Allen and dislike Lavi, he can work with them in order to get the job done. While fighting Level 4 akuma, Kanda has teamed up with Lavi regardless of neither having their innocence at the time in order to protect Kamui. The two have worked together on various other missions, and while Lavi grates Kanda's last nerve they always work well together. Allen and Kanda don’t' work together as well, but mostly because the two are always bickering or at actual physical blows with one another. Still when they're not yelling at each other they two have managed to kill akuma up to Level 4 often working in tandem.

Kanda also has a few odd eccentricities to his personality. His favorite food is soba and ever since he first tried it he's eaten nothing but for each meal. He washes his hair with soap, not shampoo, and he likes gardening. The latter is considered a type of meditation which is why Kanda enjoys it. In book smarts Kanda is number 0. It's been noted that he's the dumbest out of the four main characters, Allen, Lenalee and Lavi. While he's definitely street smart when it comes to fighting Akuma, though they occasionally get the better of him such as when he didn't notice an Akuma had mirrored the image of a Finder and preteneded to be him, he doesn't have a lot of common book sense. This does not however extend to his ability to make soba as this is also one of his hobbies. Because of Kanda's regenerative abilities, it's not possible for Kanda to have a hangover after drinking which he does do. He's also already had his first kiss at 13 though it was a drunken accident -- love is not something on Kanda's mind. Kanda also can't swim. Early on in life Alma had to help fish him out of the birthing pools not only on his birth but also later when he fell in this probably has something to do with it.

Background: Kanda was birthed in the Asia Branch Sixth Laboratory in a pit in the ground. His mind was that of an exorcist who had fallen to the Akuma 30 years prior while his body was artificially created by the Asia Branch. As a result his body has very unique abilities that isn't found in normal humans among them a quick regenerative ability that's activated by a tattoo that's approximately over Kanda's heart. The first person Kanda ever saw was Alma Karma, a Second Exorcist same as he, who had the brain of Kanda's incarnates lover. It was not however a happy reunion. The past memories were repressed in both boys, and while Alma was keen on becoming friends with Kanda, Kanda wanted nothing to do with him.

Given a little time he and Alma became friends though it was under rather unique circumstances. The friendship wasn't to last long however as Kanda was beginning to be afflicted by visions of a woman, actually Alma's incarnation in Kanda's incarnates memories, and a field full of lotus blossoms. The visions become progressively worse going so far as to create a physical pain for Kanda. The scientists in the Asia Branch recognized this as Kanda's past self's memories coming to the surface and it was decided to kill Kanda. Alma makes an attempt at saving Kanda but it fails.

Thanks to Kanda's regenerative abilities and his synchronizing with his innocence, Kanda. His past memories have returned, and knowing the truth he goes to find Alma in order for them to both escape. However by this time it's too late. Alma's memories have also returned; he slaughtered the scientist and planned on killing Kanda too so that they could die together, but Kanda has decided to live rather than waste the new life given to him. He kills his best friend, slicing him so many times that he wont be able to regenerate. He leaves Alma believing he's killed his best friend.

Kanda becomes the apprentice of Froi Tiedoll one of the Black Orders Generals. It isn't until he becomes the general's pupil that he's given the surname Kanda. Previously the only name he had was Yuu. Thereafter Kanda prefers to be called by the name Tiedoll gave him, probably because Alma was the only one to ever call him Yuu. He becomes instantly angry when anyone else calls him by that name.

Years later when he meets Allen for the first time it's hate at first sight. The two are destined to be rivals and they never get along. Thanks to Kamui's meddling the two end up on Allen's first mission together much to both boys annoyance. Their mission is find innocence, as it the mission of all Exorcists, and it's on this first mission that it becomes apparent how different Allen and Kanda's view of the world is. Kanda has no qualms about leaving Allen behind if he can't keep up with him, it's also here that he gives Allen the nickname Beansprout, telling him if he lives for longer than a month he'll call him by his name which he never does.

Kanda nearly dies on the mission and despite his earlier threats to leave Allen behind, he stays by Allen's side, not literally, until the other recuperates and even honors his request to allow the innocence to remain in the sentient doll LaLa until her creator dies.

Following the Ghost of Martel arc, Kanda goes on several small missions each of which reveals his cynicism and general do it alone attitude. He proves time and again he has no problem leaving his team mates behind if they get in his way no matter who that person is. He does also show that despite this attitude he can manage to work with others when the situation calls for it, though it doesn't mean Kanda enjoys it.

The Noah Family and the Millenium Earl kick things up a notch when they start to go after the generals of the Black Order. Kanda and his old team mates are sent to find Tiedoll much to Kanda's annoyance. While looking for Tiedoll, Kanda's team is caught up in a fight with a rather large amount of akuma. During this battle Daisya looses his life though they do find Tiedoll. Kanda and Marie ask Tiedoll to come back with them to the order, but their mentor refuses. Understanding that their own mission is to keep Tiedoll safe both Marie and Kanda accompany him on the continued quest to find more Accommodators for the innocence.

As they travel with Tiedoll they catch wind of the plight the other group, basically including everyone else that has been introduced so far into the series, has run into trouble with the Millennium Earl and the Noah family. The trio heads to Edo where they assist the others in fighting off the Noah and end up trapped together in Noah's Ark. Here the Earl tells them that the Ark itself is crumbling and unless the others can find a way out they'll die here. Too bad for the them the Earl has left behind some of the Noah to stand in their way.

While on the Ark, Kanda fights Skin Boric. He forced everyone else to leave him behind to handle the Noah, telling them that he'll catch up, however at the end of the fight, though he's won, that section of the Ark collapses around him leaving him dead. When Allen's able to put the Ark back together again, Kanda's is revivied and is able to meet up again with the others.

During the battle inside the Ark, Mugen was seriously damaged. Back at the Order Kanda and the others heal up again while they wait for their innocence to be repaired by Kamui. Things don't go well for them as through the Ark, which they'd used to get back home and were keeping in order to research more about it, the Noah get through into the order along with some Level 4 akuma. Kanda and Lavi help to fight off the akuam despite the fact that neither has their innocence with them. The Level 4 are fought off though it's left the Order in disrepair and vulnerable for further attack. This means it's time to move, and after some strange zombie and shrinking shenanigans thanks to Kamui, things start to go back to what can be considered normal for the Order.

It's while on a mission to locate some more innocence that Kanda incidentally finds out about Allen's Noah side though he doesn't report it to anyone. Some time later while he and Allen have been sent to a mission in Jordan after there's been a rather large influx of akuma worldwide, Kanda's abducted by the Noah Wisely after Kanda reacts to the name "Alma".

Abilities/Additional Notes:
♦Physical Abilities
-Healing: Kanda has unnaturally fast healing abilities including coming back from the dead. He's been 'killed' a few times only to spring back though it takes a little while. Should he ever use too much of his energy though that ability will start to work less and less or not at all. It's not an endless supply of regenerative strength, so it does have a limit though it's unlikely to be reached during game play in Adstring unless something really catastrophic happens that forces Kanda to do so. Considering he usually only fights for himself this isn't likely. His blood itself can also heal others if it gets into open woulds or if he were to offer it, but this is also unlikely so it would be more of a random occurrence if this were to occur at all.

-Strength and speed: Kanda is also unusually strong for a human. He's been able to fight akuma, even cut them in half, with ordinary weapons. He's also incredibly fast, and can jump higher than most normal people completely on his own.

-Swordsmanship: If it's shaped like a blade Kanda can use it. He's performed exceptionally well with blades other than his innocence, and has been able to hold his own again other expert swordsman including 'unbeatable' opponents.

♦Innocence
Kanda's innocence, Mugen, is how he fights and defeats Akuma. It's had several different forms throughout the series, but in essence it's always a traditional Japanese sword. The blade of course has the abilities of a normal sword, slicing, piercing etc. but as Kanda's innocence it also has different abilites called illusions, specifically 5 of them.

The different abilities range from purely affecting their surroundings to affecting Kanda as well. In first illusion netherworld insects from the blade and devour the opponent, typically akuma. Second illusions affects Mugen specifically. Energy forms around it thus sharpening the blade and making it stronger. Third illusion affects Kanda at the cost of some of his life making him both stronger and faster. If Mugen is damaged while this illusion is activated Kanda can repair it using some of his own life. Fourth illusion gives Kanda another boost of energy, and fifth illusion further increases Kanda's speed and strength, but it comes at an even greater cost to his life. He's only likely to use the last three illusions in a dire situation.

♦Random: Kanda's favorite food is soba, and since he's used to eating it for every meal of every day he's probably going to be cranky if he can't get it.

Sample Journal Post:
[ The video feed clicks on. Somehow it's fallen to the ground and is showing a worms eye view of a very disgruntled Kanda. He looks looking around him with Mugen drawn as if he's expecting to be attacked. ]

Come out you damn, Noah!

[ He grits his teeth expecting an attack to come at any minute, but when nothing happens he relaxes, marginally, and puts Mugen away. ]

Tch…Where the hell am I anyway?

[ He starts looking around again and that's when he notices the PCD. ]

What's this thing?

[ He picks it up and stares into the camera before turning it over several times in his hand accidentally switching it to text. ]

AsliueKIakl;su778aslkdOIUW.asoiud

[ And onto voice. He's not really used to this particular type of technology and he's more trying to figure out just what this thing is. ]

Dammit, what the hell happened anyway? Hey! Beansprout! Where are you? Dammit, that stupid idiot probably got himself lost or something.
Sample RP:
"First Illusion." Kanda called forth the Netherworld Insects. In a quick slashing motion of his sword they burst forth and attack the ball shaped akuma before him. The insects dig into the akuma's flesh devouring it and causing it to explode in a bright light. Kanda moves forward Mugen at the ready as he slices through more akuma in order to get to his real target the Level 2 in front of him.

The demon taunts Kanda who doesn't initially react at all except to call forth another illusion. He moves the sword quickly slicing into the akuma in a pattern that almost looks like a flower when it's done. There's a cry of dismay from the creature as the slices manifest themselves on it's body and it too disappears in a flash of bright light.

The enemies defeated Kanda lands back on his feet and sheaths Mugen. It's night time now and more akuma are moving in all around them. He curses silently and moves into an alleyway to stay hidden if only for a short while to catch his breath and check up on his teammates.

"Marie, Daisya." His golem flutters close by. Marie reports in but there's only static and a strange noise from Daisya's golem.

Kanda frowns, his eyes narrowing. Why wasn't Daisya reporting in? Had he gotten into some sort of trouble? He stands ready to head back out again. They'd promised each other they'd meet back up at daybreak. For now they were set to continue fighting the akuma until they were cleared from the city and that's what they would continue doing.

Kanda withdrew Mugen again activating the innocence with a quick stroke of his index and middle finger. That idiot Daisya better be okay.

He ran at the opening of the alley even as an akuma blocked his path. Let them try and stop him. He had a promise to keep and he was going to be there at the rendezvous come morning. The others had better be there, for their own sake.

Morning had come and Daisya had not arrived. His golem had and when they tracked it back to the last spot Daisya had been a sad sight met their eyes.

Anger boiled over in Kanda's heart. Damn them. Damn the akuma, damn the Noah family, and damn the Millenium Earl for ever existing.

He clutched tightly at Mugen though he said nothing as he gazed at the lifeless body of what had been what could pass as Kanda's friends. He hadn't often gotten along with Daisya but he had cared for him a hell of a lot more than others in the Order. They had grown up together and if ever there was someone close to being a brother to Kanda it had been Daisya.

Now he was gone.

He turned away from the scene still not saying anything. He didn't cry. Tears were a waste. If he cried for every death that was handed down by the Earl or any of his subordinates he would have dehydrated long ago for want of tears. Kanda closed his eyes and silently swore every last akuma he met would find their death at the tip of his blade. It wasn't about the Order any longer, it was about those few he could call family. It was about avenging the one death that he had caused that he did actually regret.

If it wasn't for the Millenium Earl, if it wasn't for the akuma then none of Kanda's life would have ever come to being. However, if it hadn't been for any of that Kanda wouldn't have existed either. Maybe in a different world it would have made a difference but what did it matter now? This was Kanda's reality and it was what he had to deal with. He'd keep moving forward, he'd keep on living till the day came when he could meet that person again.

Until then he wouldn't stop fighting.
